The Green Flash
Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 12:13AM When I visited Hawaii as a young drinker I was told to watch for a phenomena called The Green Flash. Being a comic book reader I thought this was some kind of Earth 12 super hero, but I soon found out it was something you had to watch the skies closely for. Not limited to Hawaii, the green flash can happen any place near the midriff of the earth, but the long horizon over the Pacific makes it easier to see. The green flash is caused by a refraction of the sun’s light rays by the atmosphere over the extreme low angle of the horizon. This bending of the sun’s light causes the green spectrum to be the last color seen before the light disappears. For it to occur the day must be clear.
So, to see it you kind of have to look directly into the sun (not really advised). As the sun sets you have to wait until just before the sun totally sets, then look at the horizon. If the conditions are right a green flash of color will linger for just a second where the sun was. It's kind of cool.
If you miss it, mix up one of these that I had at the Princeville Hotel in Kauai, the first place I ever saw the Green Flash. Not sure if it was the sun or the drink, but I saw something that day.
GREEN FLASH
2 oz. Orange Juice
2 oz. Pineapple Juice
1.5 oz. Dark Rum (I have been using the Trader Vic's brand rum a lot lately because really for the money it's really good)
0.75 oz. Amaretto
0.75 oz. Blue Curacao
Mixing Instruction
Shake well with ice, garnish with pineapple wedge and a cherry.
